In this article, we’ll review the major highways and roads in the city. We’ll also discuss the Presidio-Ojinaga International Bridge and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Finally, we’ll cover business routes off of US 67. The business loops, Business Loop 67 and Business Loop 67A, do not connect with each other and do not pass through the central business district.

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)

Investing $80 million over 10 years to improve roads is a significant step toward revitalizing this community. A recent Fugro Roadware study analyzed the state of the city’s 660 lane miles of streets. In San Angelo, roads were given a pavement condition index of 45.9. Among the most urgent priorities for reconstruction were Bell and 29th streets, MLK, College Hills, and Southwest boulevards. Avenue N will be treated with a mill and overlay, which will remove the surface layer of asphalt and re-overlay it.

The Ports-to-Plains trade corridor connects the energy and agricultural heartlands of the United States. It runs through San Angelo, which is located between Interstate Highways 10 and 20. The area is connected by State Highways 277 and 87 and consists of almost 5,000 miles of roadway and touches over 275 communities. To improve transportation, San Angelo is located at the center of a major trade corridor.

Business routes off US 67

The Texas Department of Transportation manages business routes throughout the state, including Business Routes Off US 67 in San Angelo, Tx. There are currently seven business routes off US 67, and two former ones. Business Routes Off US 67 are identified by their alphabetic suffixes and ascend eastward and southward. For example, Business 67-H should be known as Loop 545, in line with other cities in the state. Business Route 67-J should be known as FM 380, as it is not located in the historic and cultural center of San Angelo.

The city has an overall plan for transportation and is developing its transportation system. The city’s Comprehensive Plan, adopted in 2003, includes an updated Master Thoroughfare Plan. It includes the functional classification of existing transportation facilities and plans for future major thoroughfares. Staff reviews and proposes amendments based on new information. In the meantime, business and transportation needs in the city will continue to grow.

Interstate 27

The city council of San Angelo, TX, has unanimously approved a proposed route for an extension of Interstate 27, connecting Lubbock and Amarillo. The Texas Department of Transportation has developed the proposed route and held public hearings to get the public’s input. To facilitate the study, the Ports-to-Plains Advisory Committee was formed. This committee comprised of the mayors and judges of each city along the Ports-to-Plains Corridor. Meetings were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ports-to-Plains Advisory Committee established Segment Committees for each geographic segment of the corridor. The committee also included representatives of the oil and gas industry, chambers of commerce, and other interested parties.
